I graduated from
with a BA in
Classical Greek
(minor Latin, and some Hebrew for good measure) and
Computer Science
(second major).
Then, I earned my master's in computer science from the
,
concentrating on computer networks (management and security).
While working on my computer science degrees, I co-oped
for ,
initially in Roanoke (Texas) but mostly in Austin. I worked, primarily,
in the AIX Technical Support Center, but I also spent a year part-time in
the AIX documentation group where I re-wrote more than half of the AIX
System Management Guide: Communications and Networks (October 1993
edition).
I spent a summer on the
Information Systems LAN Support team.
After grad school, I worked as a Consultant for
which was bought by
in October 1999.
In 2000 I joined
as a Senior Consultant.
Then, in December 2003, Callisma was bought by
and Callisma also became
known as
.
On November 18, 2005, SBC bought
, and Callisma's name
permanently changed to AT&T Consulting.
At the beginning of my consulting career, I focused on the design, implementation and
integration of network management systems and obtained certifications in several
of the major network management applications (OpenView Network Node Manager,
NerveCenter, NetCool). I also wrote an untold number of scripts (in Perl and
other languages)
to extend the capabilities of these (and other) applications and customize them for
individual client environments.
Network management led me to a broader focus on
ITSM (IT Service Management),
specifically ITIL (the IT Infrastructure Library) in which I am also certified.
As an ITSM consultant,
I assist IT service providers with progressing through
the service lifecycle so that they more effectively and efficiently deliver
value to the businesses they serve.

ITIL Experiences - Cases Studies from the itSMF USA 2006 Annual Conference
which I delivered on September 13, 2007 at the
AT&T Technical Leaders Forum in Austin, Texas.
During my undergrad and grad education, as well as at IBM, I wrote non-trivial
programs in over a dozen programming languages. Even though I am not, and
never wanted to be, a professional programmer, those skills (especially Perl)
have served me
exceedingly well as a consultant. I continue to learn new languages as I find
driving problems to solve.
Those driving problems extend well beyond my profession.
My professional experience in scripting has contributed to my gaining a vision
for developing tools to simplify and automate tasks in non-technical areas
of life. With this as inspiration, I founded a company,
Treat Bancroft,
whose mission is to
provide web-based tools for financial and spiritual discipline:
